When PNG beats JPG
Pick PNG when the image still has work ahead of it. Screenshots, drawings, logos, scanned line art, and anything headed for the image to SVG tool all do better as PNG, because JPG compression leaves faint blocks around hard edges. Those blocks are invisible in a vacation photo but they turn into messy paths the moment you trace them.
PNG is also the honest choice for archiving a decoded copy. The conversion happens once, losslessly, and you never have to wonder what a second compressor did to the pixels.
What happens to transparency
Most photos that come straight off the iPhone camera are fully opaque, so there is usually nothing to preserve. But HEIF files can carry an alpha channel, and edited images, stickers, and cutouts sometimes do. Where transparency exists in the source, it survives the trip to PNG.
The reverse is not true: converting cannot invent transparency. If you want a background removed, that is an editing job, not a format change.
The trade: bigger files
HEIC is a very efficient camera format, and PNG is not trying to compete on size. Expect the PNG to come out larger than the original, sometimes much larger. That is fine for editing and uploads with generous limits, and less fine for email. If small and shareable is the actual goal, the HEIC to JPG converter is the better tool for the job.

Does converting HEIC to PNG lose quality?
No new loss is added. PNG is a lossless format, so every pixel from the decoded HEIC is stored exactly as it came out. One honest caveat: wide gamut Display P3 photos from newer iPhones can shift slightly when decoded as standard sRGB, so keep the original if exact color matters.
Will my PNG have a transparent background?
Only if the source image already has one. Transparency is preserved where present, but most straight-from-camera iPhone photos are fully opaque. Converting does not remove a background, it just keeps whatever alpha channel is already there.
Why is the PNG bigger than my HEIC?
That is normal. HEIC compresses aggressively and PNG stores every pixel losslessly, so the file grows. It is the price of a perfect copy. If you need a small file for sharing, convert to JPG instead.
